Gender roles/characteristics…. are they changing??

This is an interesting little clip about gender reversal. It made me question whether or not we still have distinct gender divisions. I think on average we have the stereotypical strong, athletic, unemotional men and passive, motherly women. However, in our day and age women work just as much as men and there are a lot more stay at home fathers than there were years ago. I think as time progresses and more women are graduating college and building stable careers we will notice that women will become more independent. It is proven that on average men are strong and that they require more food but I don’t think all men are unemotional or athletic. Could there be other factors involved? Does our high rate of divorce, in society, stem from the fact that women are more likely to work as much as men and thus cause conflict or competition or arguments over caring for the children?

  1. I thought this was a very interesting video but I feel like they looked at a men in a very stereotypical way. I know there are men out there who act in this way but it’s not all men. Good video, but very biased.

  2. I think gender roles are stereotypical on both ends. Over the past years we have seen men and women behave differently and not simply follow the traditional roles. I think women are already more independent than they ever were before, I also believe that men are beginning to show their “soft” side although they do not always like to admit it.

  3. I am shocked that the author of this post is unsure about whether gender roles/divisions exist. Clearly, they do – in the workplace, in the home and in many other institutions of our society. I feel as though this video is not need in order to get a good understanding of this. Simply by observing the actions of males and females in these different elements demonstrates the characteristics and qualities that society has attached to men and those that are attached to women. Fortunately, our society is becoming more progressive and it is now more acceptable to not be following the “norms”. Although there has been improvement, we still have a long way to go. Below is an interesting quote about gender roles in our society:
