A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Obama’s Pledge to Native Americans

I don’t really read up too much on the more obscure news stories surrounding politics, but while looking at news headlines this article really caught my attention. This article deals with Obama’s focus on Native Americans.  Everyone in America, no matter what their skin color, argues about who is American and who isn’t and who is more rightful in their claims… It’s funny that the people you hear so little about are those who were and still are the true Americans, the Native Americans. In this article Obama discusses plans on the agenda in regard to Native Americans. A direct quote of his explains…””You will not be forgotten as long as I’m in this White House.” In the society we live in many would argue that the white image is the true representation of an American citizen, granted they have been here for many centuries now, we cannot neglect the fact that they were not the first people to step foot on this land. I too forget that Native Americans are in need of government as much help, if not more than the other racial and ethnic groups. Obama’s plans talked about improving on treaty promises, healthcare, crime, and violence. I’m glad Obama is aware of Native American’s need for government support also. Hopefully his promise follows through.

  1. I truly hope that this is a plan he follows through because as you have stated Americans always forget that this country once belong to a group of people that have been killed off by European explorers. They need the government’s help and not just those monthly checks that I know the Seminole Indians get from my hometowm. They need substantial and permanent help from the government. Honestly with all this talk about nationalism, I think Americans need to be reminded of the past to see the error of all this nonsense.

  2. I agree, it’s great that he’s making an effort to reach out to the Native Americans, whom have suffered greatly at the hands of white Americans. Furthermore, I believe that Obama is sincere in his promise. We just have to hope that he is capable and ensures that he does all he can to improve the lives of Native Americans and advance their rights.
