Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

He refused to marry a couple because bride was white, groom was black

A Louisiana justice of the peace had refused to marry and interracial couple and after receiving a lot if heat from civil rights groups and several public officials, even the governor. So after this he decided to quit from his position. I think this guy did the right thing resigning because he should of never refuse to marry someone because of there race. I also think its sad that people are still refusing marriage because of race.

  1. I feel that he did the right thing too! He shouldnt be telling people who can and can’t be getting married based on the concept of black and white. If it isnt against the law, then its perfectly fine. His own personal opinion and mindset should never be the reason he keeps two people from being happy

  2. I recall talking about this class in class the other week. This guy is absolutely ridiculous to refuse an interracial couple to marry…it’s 2009, give me a break. What goes around…comes around. I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy found himself receiving death threats. He must be one sad individual.

  3. I think he would have been fired if he didn’t resign on his own, which is why he did so right away. He was aware that what he was doing was wrong and unjust, so it was his way of covering up his discriminatory behavior. It is his job to marry couples not to decide who is right for whom.
