A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Americans Still Scared of Change

with 4 comments

Yesterday Maine voters repealed a law passed by the legislature that would have allowed gay couples to be married in the state of Maine. This was a critical battle for gay rights, and the voters did show their power. According to the article, gay marriage has lost in every single state in which it has been put to a popular vote. I find this statistic astounding. All the same arguments are made, where proponents of gay marriage just want their right to marry their partner and conservative elements demand the protection of the institution of marriage.

Personally I believe that the “protection of marriage” crap is only going to last until the old conservative baby boomers die off and the more liberal open-minded generations fill the voter polls, just like it has always been.

  1. It’s total BS that people have such a problem with this topic. People tend to connect marriage with a religious connotation, when in truth these couple are asking for a legal marriage, a civil union. The government has no right to keep this right from gay couples. Religious institutions are one thing, though I think they should allow it too, but by law these couples should definitely be able to marry.

  2. Yea it’s really dumb. I think it’s funny how so many people think that America is the land of the free yet there are so many restrictions on basic freedoms that people supposedly have.

  3. I think this is stupid also. America is suppose to be a place were people have many freedoms but not allowing gay marriage goes against freedom that is preventing freedom just because people would not like to see gay marriage.

  4. I have no problem with gay marriages and I do believe that if we passed this bill there would be a huge influx of gay marriages and it could possibly effect our country. Just like anything else that change in time there will be a big boom and then everything calms down. I feel like the faster we allow gay marriages, the faster we can get over this whole issue.
