Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

TV Show Cops

In my opinion, no other television series can portray systematic discrimination better than cops. While watching the show over the weekend, I saw numerous black and Hispanic people brutally arrested for drug use and taken into custody without a care in the world. Sure these people were guilty and in need authoritative correction,  but the thing is not everyone was treated equally. In a scene in the very same episode, four white guys (20s) driving around smoking marijuana and doing other drugs car were spotted by a police officer who pulled them over. The officer, after a simple search, had an overwhelming amount of evidence to convict these guys such as bongs, multiple bags of drugs, alcohol, and even a confession that they were doing drugs, yet he let them go. The officer, who was also white, applauded these men (who were too busy smiling at the camera to listen to what the cop was saying) for their noble honesty, gave them a slap on the wrist (called their mothers) and subsequently sent them on their way.

That scene is perhaps one of the most outrageous things I have ever seen on television. How come none of the minorities were given breaks like these guys were? How come these guys weren’t dragged off to prison like their fellow law breakers? Is this police discretion gone to far?

  1. wow…that is sooo sad, even after all I have learned about racism still being prevelant in America, I am still shocked and appalled when I read stories like these.

  2. The producer of Cops was asked the question in an interview ‘Why do you not have any arrests of white collared crime?’ This an interesting especially at this time in history where white collared crime has been high as seen with Madoff’s arrest as well as other high profile cases of fraud. His answer was that it is not as exciting as a high speed cop chase of a murder. However, as zsayed has stated most of the criminals shown on the show are Black or Hispanic. This gives these two minorities unfair coverage as always being criminals. While Whites are not shown as often if are like zsayed said are portrayed as apologetic and innocent.

  3. Its sad but true that minorities often get harsher punishment for the same crime that whites commit. Probably one of the worst remaining forms of racism.

  4. Police officers are trained to do racial profiling and are often target minorities associated to criminal activities. This could explain why we see more minorities being discriminated against. However, this no excuse for not giving whites an equal penalty. Clearly this demonstrates that racism exists in our society.
