Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

with one comment

So it seems as though there is still racism going on in the schools. The article that read stated that there has been thousands of cases in the US where the faculty have been reporting that children are being racist. Students have been bullying and calling other children names. I believe that kids don’t really understand what they are saying. I think that the children have heard and seen their parents say many racists comments. And the parents are where I believe children hear such words. Children will repeat words even if they dont understand them. So the parents should be careful of their choice of words around the children.

  1. I, like many, would agree that children are likely to mimic what their parents say. It’s important that parents are more cautious about what is said around their children. Even if parents think “he/she doesn’t even know what that means”, such statements/names/slurs should not be used. The children are still likely to repeat it, even if they are unaware of the meanings of the words. Perhaps the children, or even toddlers are using racial slurs or nicknames, simply because the people that they are interacting with are “different.” It’s important that parents teach their kids how to embrace and accept the differences, racial or otherwise.
