Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Official in interracial couple flap under fire

with one comment

A local official in Louisiana  refused to marry an interracial couple. In Doing this, this person clearly broke the law. I think this is a bad thing people should not be denied marriage because they are a different race. I also think this man should be punished or even fired because he clearly broke the law.

  1. Question: Was this a Court Appointed official that worked for the local government or an officiant (with or without religious ties)?

If this was a Court appointed official, then I think that there should be some form of repercussions for his actions. Or if the courts refused to issue this couple a marriage licenses then there is a really large problem. On the other hand, it is not illegal for an officiant to refuse to marry someone on the basis of race, religion, etc.
