Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Many angry man wouldn’t marry interracial couple

with 6 comments

A Louisiana couple tried to get married earlier this month and Keith Bardwell, a white justice of the peace in Louisiana refused to the couple. His refusal has prompted calls for an investigation or resignation from civil and constitutional rights groups.

I was surprised at this article because every heterosexual couple is allowed to get married no matter the race. Keith Bardwell should resign because he has been doing this for years. And his comments didnt add to his credibility either. He stated that he’s worried about their children’s futures. This is a clear example of how racism is still alive in America.

  1. Wow this is shocking. I can’t wait to see how this story unfolds. And he definitely should get fired

  2. It’s really sad to see that things like this still happen. The excuse is an old one and people who say it’s because of their worry for the children are basically admitting that racism is still prevalent. If racism wasn’t present so strongly then there wouldn’t be a need to be “worried about their children’s futures”.

  3. Ridiculous. If drug addicts, alcoholics, child molesters, child abusers, and other horrible parents are allowed to get married and have children, then why can’t a perfectly functional interracial couple? How does he even know that this couple will end up having children? Marriage does not equal children, so in my opinion, his excuse is ludicrous since plenty of interracial couple have children without getting married and this couple may not even have kids. This couple just wants to take their (and only the 2 of them) relationship to the next level and declare their love and commitment to each other. Who does he think he is to get in the way of that?

  4. It’s definitely a shame that people would have views like this. I honestly don’t see any disadvantage that a person may suffer because they are of mixed races. In the community where I’m from, people who are of mixed cultures are viewed with beauty and awe. I definitely agree with the comment above me. Marriage does not equal children. How could he just assume? What an excuse.

    • I agree aunanan7, I personally think mix children are gorgeous. To think that someone would be disadvantaged because they are mixed is nonsense. After all don’t we live in the melting pot! Few people are purely one race, just about everyone of us are mixed in someway or another.

  5. I find this article really shocking, that such an act of discrimination still continues to go on even today. In my opinion, the couple should sue Keith Bardwell for discrimination. Keith should also take a racial sensitivity class after this ordeal. Clearly this person thinks it is the 1950’s or something, and thinks he can impose his racial views on others.
