Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Are gay rights civil rights?

with 4 comments

This article/video explores whether the gays and lesbians struggle for equality can be equated with the Civil Rights Movement.NAACP chairman Julian Bond spoke at the recent March for Equality in DC, and addressed this question. He suggested that yes, gay rights are civil rights. He defined civil rights as the right to equal treatment before the law. Furthermore, he claimed that sexual disposition parallels race.

Questions to consider:

Are gay rights civil rights?

Does the nature  vs. nurture argument need to be addressed when considering gay rights?

Can comparisons be made between the African American Civil Rights movement and the movement for gays and rights?

It is special to be free from discrimination?

  1. I do think that gay rights are civil rights. I think that we can’t with any concreteness that any one difference between two people holds any more weight over another difference. Whether those differences include race, age, sexual orientation, or gender; the equality of all these groups concerns civil rights.

  2. I agree that gay rights are civil rights. Also, I don’t think the nature vs. nurture argument works for homosexuals. It’s as much in their nature to be gay as heterosexuals to be straight. I think it can be compared since they have less rights because of something that is a fundamental part of them, like race.

  3. The definition of civil rights is a class of rights and freedoms that protect individuals from the government and state power and assure the ability to participate in the civil and political life of the state. These people are looked down upon by society and get less rights simply due to their sexual orientation, something needs to change.

  4. Gay civil rights are rights because they are people in society. We can’t tell people in society they dont have any rights just because they have a different choice of sexuality, they deserve all the same treatment as anyone else.
