Very sticky situation… segregation in prisons

There are many situations that arise in our society when politicians are unsure of the outcome or which side to take. This article speaks on segregation in prisons. It is stated that inmates loose most of their rights when they are sent to prison. The prisons are given “free hand in managing their facilities”. As a result, this California prison believes that if they bunk all black men together separately from all white men then they are facilitating “safer” living conditions. I do not believe this is the case. I understand that inmates do not have all the rights they would if they were a free citizen, but racial discrimination is unconstitutional and morally wrong. This situation is tricky… where do we draw the line… Yes they are horrible people for committing acts of crime but once again there shouldn’t be a distinction based on the color of their skin. Criminals are all there for similar reasons so they should all be treated the same. Unless an individual is outwardly causing trouble I feel prisons should not discriminate based on race.

  1. I’m not sure I see this as racial discrimination. If they purposely put one of these groups in a worse section of the prison, then yes, but I think this is more of a case of ignorance. They think separating criminals based on race is the answer to less violence? If anything, I would separate the prisoners on a violent/nonviolent crime line, not a black/white one.

  2. I agree that prisons should not be directly racially discriminated. However, not all people in prison are “horrible people” and they are not all there for “similar reasons,” you might want to take that into consideration when you think about the inmates.

  3. By no means does separating criminals by race makes things any better. In fact, it creates more violence amongst the jail system. People start to click together and it actually will create more problems that lead to violence and destruction.

  4. While this may be morally wrong to segregate different races, if they were to put all the races together it would probably cause even more problems. I’ve watched a lot of these shows about prisoners and their living conditions and even when the prison puts all the races together they automatically segregate themselves. I feel like, yes this is wrong but there isn’t that much that can be done.
