A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

The Projects

with 4 comments

I have been spending  lot of time this past year in a government housing project called Pine Ridge. I’ve gotten to know a few families there and they told me about the difficulties associated with trying to get out of the projects. It becomes a cycle of poverty because one can only earn a certain amount of money legally before getting evicted. The sum of money is not enough to buy a new house or support a family, so it is easy to get trapped. I think that this might also be why a lot of people in the neighborhood feel the need to earn money under the table, by way of drugs or gambling. I was really frustrated when I had this conversation and feel that something needs to be done.

  1. This is the sad truth, my father is a Medicaid provider for the state of Florida and he sees this all the time with his clients and their benefits. If you make over a certain predetermined amount of money in a month (because of month income reviews) you lose your benefits. There is no tapering off effect, you’re benefits are just cut. How is one supposed to get out of this cycle.

  2. I had no idea that the residence in government housing could only make a certain amount of money before having their benefits taken from them. There has to be something done about this or these people will never get out of the ghetto. It makes sense why there are so many drugs in this area because it’s a way to get out of this shitty situation.

    • wow, this is a horrible truth…it makes one wonder if the government really has our best intrest in mind. I agree this is a bad situation that needs attention and change. But where is the change we were promised?

  3. this is a bad situation for the people in this program. And its hard to fight this because its the government and its hard to challenge the government. This is a problem that needs to be address but what could be done if the government is running this program.
