Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Another ABC Experiment

with one comment

I recently read this article and watched the video about ABC conducting an experiment in a NJ deli in an tolerant, middle class neighborhood.  In te experiment ABC had two hispanic day laborers struggle to order a sandwich in the deli because they coudn’t speek english.  The deli worker started yelling racist insults at the hispanics while other customers watched.  The deli worker and the day laborers were actors hired by ABC.

Surprisingly, when he hispanics asked others in the deli for help ordering, the customers told them to try another deli down the road.  Most customers were frozen in the face of such blatant racism. One African-American man took the deli workers side and told them to get out and even claimed that they take other Americans’ jobs.

While ABC has done several of these experiments I definatey think they are valuable because we see just how racist America still is.  Perhaps we don’t see such obvious racial attacks or hear such blunt statements on a daily basis, but it is beneficial to see how our communities react when such a situation is thrown in their face.

Here’s the website I found the article…http://abcnews.go.com/WhatWouldYouDo/Story?id=6551048#

  1. this experiment is a great eye opener. a lot of times we need to see or be placed into an extreme situation to realize something about ourselves, good or bad.
