A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Racism at UF?

This week the main topic around campus was the elections. The Alligator revealed that many of our student government leaders have criminal records. The main focus of this article was to trash the Unite Party, but honestly that’s not what stuck out to me. What stuck out to me from this article was one particular student who had an extensive criminal record. He had been arrested several times for drinking under age, DUI assault, and violating his probation. Now in my personal opinion, again this is my personal opinion, I feel like a minority student would’ve been kicked out of school either the very first arrest or shortly after if they kept committing the same crime. The alligator mentioned him getting arrested 5 times, and two of those times involved him violating his probation. Its not even about the University of Florida kicking him out of school, I feel like the state of Florida would have given anybody else time in jail for the same crimes. Now I have nothing against this individual, and I don’t wish for him to be punished or kicked out of the University because I agree with the notion that everyone makes mistakes and that people disserve second chances. However, I wish our judicial system, especially here at the University of Florida was as lenient for everyone else. I am in a Latin Fraternity, and several of my brothers have been kicked out of the University of Florida for first offenses involving similar alcohol related charges; while we have a student senator that was arrested for under age drinking twice his freshman year, a DUI last year, a bar fight in Key West (while he was on probation), and again recently for assaulting another individual while intoxicated (again violating his probation). I wish were all so lucky to get this many chances without a day spent in Jail, or being expelled from the University.

  1. I think the most interesting part of this is that this student got a lot of slack not only in Gainesville, but in Key West as well. This shows that the lenience in the legal system is a problem that is something that has infiltrated our entire system of justice, or rather, injustice.

  2. I agree that people should get second chances. But third chance? and fourth chance? and fifth chance? And then elected to student government!! That seems absurd that anybody could support such a violent uncontrollable fool.

    • How you represent a student body of 50,000 students when you can’t even represent “yourself” in a presentable fashion?? I don’t think he should have gotten the chance to be in this election, no matter if he is White, Black, Hispanic or purple.
