A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Indian stereotypes

with 3 comments

Why are Indians associated with owning gas stations and motel owners. You know Indians do have other jobs. Most of them are doctors, but I know my uncles are engineers, teachers, and taxi diver. I think stereotypes are produced long time ago for people that is associated with. I think stereotypes will die down.

  1. I really wish stereotypes will die as well but I know that there are many Americans that are ignorant and will always have stereotypes for all people.

  2. I think in American society at least Indians are making a progressive breakthrough, but I still acknowledge your point that there are still stereotypes of Indians. Nonetheless, I think the whole Apu thing has died down in recent years as real Indians enter mainstream media. GOP member Bobby Jindal was elected governor of Louisiana (a Southern state of all places) few years ago. Padma Lakshmi, who hosts Top Chef, is featured in Carls Jr. and shampoo commercials regularly aired on cable television. Indians are also making a impact on Wall Street from what I read as well. Vikram Pandit is the CEO of Citigroup whereas Indra Nooyi is the CEO of PepsiCo.

  3. Indians are known as hotel owners because of a man named Shilpan Patel, an Indian immigrant who came to this country with $ in his pocket who now (among with many members of his family) owns quite a few hotels. Personally I think he’s a good role model for any immigrant coming to this country.
