Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

improper introduction

with one comment

So today I was talking to a new friend of mine who was telling me about her experience here when she first got to UF this fall…She is a phd student in the food science department and the only black person there. She told me about how some white girl walked up to her and asked here if she was from somewhere far because she’s never seen people like her around here. I was a little taken back. My friend proceeded to tell me that when she asked the girl what she meant about that, the girl responding that she was just trying to understood herself. First of all, what kind of introduction is that? I thought introductions involved “Hi, how are you doing?” “My name is…” My friend who is actually from a Caribbean island was really shocked and taken back as well because she never heard of such thing. She really felt that there was a racial overtone. People we have got to do better.

  1. Yea that was definitely a rude introduction on that persons part it seems, however this person might have been so sheltered growing up that she thought she was approaching your friend in the right manner or just didn’t know how to because she is just ignorant of minorities.
