What I love about the Colbert Report is that behind the facade there is always an underlying truth.
Pretty much what I got from this video was that yes there are racist conservatives out there who speak out against the president every chance they get. However, there are many conservatives out there who speak out against the president, not because of the color of his skin, but because of his policies. Unfortunately these conservatives are much of the time considered racist as well. What Stephan is saying is that if there are black people also speaking out against the president, than not all white conservatives who speak out against the president are racist. Even former President Clinton agrees that the reason behind much of the dissent is policy issue.

If you look at the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll you’ll see that Obama’s approval rating is going down and the disapproval rating is going up. This is not people turning racist, this is a policy issue.

  1. I also love The Colbert Report, because I think that Colbert is hilarious and he approaches a lot of subjects that would be too taboo for anyone but a comedian to handle. However, I think that your assessment of the underlying issues of that segment miss the mark. Colbert is a satirical comic, a master at keeping his composure while saying some of the most off-the-wall remarks that he finds absurd. While I, and I think Colbert would too, agree with your assessment that not all conservatives who oppose the President are racist, the point of the segment was that too many conservatives are using policy and vague quotes by African Americans to oppose the President, and are thereby exposing their own deep-seeded thoughts on race. So, while not all conservitive pundits that speak against the President are racist, those that Colbert highlighted surely have some unresolved racial issues that are surfacing as a result of President Obama’s drop in approval ratings. Prior to this drop it would have been politically and socially unacceptable to criticize the President. So now, some of the racism is boiling to the surface under the guise of opposition to his policies.
