A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Obama’s Presidency

with 2 comments

The other week, we were discussing in class about Obama’s presidency. Someone said something along the lines that “we will see if a Black person can really be president of the United States.” This may not be what the comment meant, but when I first heard this comment it angered me, because so many people believe that if Obama can’t succeed as president no Black person can be president ever again. By this judgment, we should have no more White presidents, because Bush was in office. If Obama does not do well, this SHOULD NOT close the doors on other Blacks or other minorities wanting to become president.

I think he doing a fine job and the only reason he is being held back is because Republicans are opposing him every step they can to make sure he fails. Obama has said that he wants to have both parties agree on the new bills, but it just will not happen. The Republicans want him to fail so as to have a Republican President in 4 years and no more Blacks as president. This is all not said ever, but they have supporters who would competely agree on this.

  1. I agree that President Obama is doing a good job overall, but like any man there are shortcomings, and it is the nature of our competitive democratic society that there are large groups which will oppose his interests. Even when they are (nominally) for the greater good, when people see an action that will hurt their own interests they fight it.
While I certainly feel like more would be accomplished if everyone just got along and did what was best, people simply cant agree on that. President Obama and the democratic party have the executive branch and a majority in congress. If he doesnt get his platform executed, thats going to be on him.

  2. I feel that saying that the only reason Obama isn’t succeeding is because of of Republican opposition is a throw back. He should be able to pass bills, he has a Democratic Congress. Why is it so hard to believe that bills aren’t being passed and policies aren’t being enacted because some of them are actually bad bills, they are bad policies. Heaven forbid Americans start realizing that some of the things Obama promised in the election wont happen because they were empty and impossible. Obama promised too much and he wont be able to live up to the expectations he set for himself and Americans set for him.
Also, Bush has far more Democratic opposition than Obama has Republican, but I know that no one will argue that is why his presidency was less than ideal. We cant hold a double standard like that.
And if Obama’s presidency closes the door to future black politician’s dreams of the highest office in the land (which I hope it doesn’t), it’ll be because of he set the bar too high for himself, and American’s have just too many expectations of what he is capable of.
And this isn’t just because he’s black. The same would be occuring if it were Hillary Clinton, or Joseph Lieberman. Whenever a minority group takes on a new position the performance of the first person to take that step is always going to be scrutinized and is always going to determine how the public will view that minority in the future of that position. As a Catholic I’m always pleased that people overlook the Bay of Pigs fiasco when scrutinizing Kennedy’s short time in office.
