Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Racism everywhere

with one comment

I read an article about a cosmetic company in India targeting darker skinned males with their blunt advertisements of “whitening” cream. What amazes me about this article is that yet and still in 2009 there is blunt racism going on around the world. I got this exerpt from http://www.cnn.com:

” In one TV commercial, two men, one with dark skin, the other with light skin; stand on a balcony overlooking a neighborhood. The dark skin guy turns to his friend and says in Hindi, ‘I am unlucky because of my face.’ His light skin friend replies, ‘Not because of your face, because of the color of your face.’ Suddenly the light skin guy throws his friend a cream. It’s a whitening cream.”

I realize that whitening creams are nothing new, and that no one can make the sale of a product like this illegal. However, there is a difference between illegal and immoral and both are wrong. These advertisements are clearly immoral and they give off the statement that being whiter is better. How do we stop this as a society? This problem clearly stretches beyond national borders, cultures and ethnicity, which shows how deeply ingrained racism is in humanity.

  1. This is a concept that always amazes me. It makes you wonder how we got to this point. Who decided what was desireable? How long has this been going on? I think that it would be interesting to trace this back and see where these ideas came from. I wonder if it is just prevalent in areas that have been in contact with european civilization, or if it also holds true to civilizations up in mountains that have never come in contact with any other groups of people?
