Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

George Lopez

I recently watched a George Lopez comedy special on HBO in which he criticized the way White Americans rear their children, accusing it of causing new generations to be cowardly and spoiled. Although extremely funny, the jokes hid an underlying resentment toward White Americans for their treatment of minorities, especially Hispanics. At the end of the show George Lopez went so far as to promise Whites that once Hispanics became the predominant group in the U.S. (which he believes will happen very soon), they would show whites the same level of respect and dignity which they have been shown. How many minorities share this desire for revenge on white people? And do they have the right to feel this way? In reality, non-black Hispanics deserve this same resentment from Blacks because they discriminate as much as Whites. Every group discriminates against another, but only one (Whites) is privileged. As long as cultural differences and uneven power distribution continue to exist, so will prejudice.

  1. Racism exists everywhere in the media. I have especially noticed this on comedy central. It is so easy for people to laugh about, but when we really look at the root of the problem and how much it is affecting our woprld, i wonder if we would laugh about it so carelessly…

  2. This is just a reminder of how no matter how far we as a society have come, we will always remain in our infancy. So do we fight prejudice with prejudice, an eye for an eye? Or do we move on from this to pursue a life of justice and equality, if that is even an option.

    • Racism is perpetual; it persists through modern advancements not because it is primordial or “infantile” but because it is (unfortunately) effective. It is effective at manipulating and subverting targeted castes, cultural groups- etc. Yet racism is as much a byproduct of progress as it is a detrimental facet in the social/caste power balances. The issue is that as a society progresses from a basic functional stage of hunter-gatherer, to an advanced socioeconomic community, the necessity to target and blame specific groups (or castes in many cases) emerges. Racism is a social catharsis; that is to say, it will continue through any and all advancements in human civilization until social norms are systematically broken down–this breakdown of (American) social norms is not bound to happen in any near future.

  3. George Lopez show is hilarious & I must admit it’s one of my favorite shows to watch. But I believe every race are as prejudice as the next race just because we believe our culture is more superior then others.
