A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Racism at a restaurant?

with 3 comments

I read an article about a woman who was up in arms about the server writing “tip not included” at the bottom of her bill.  She argued that the server wrote this on the bottom of her bill but didn’t do this for the white patrons eating at the restaurant.  I  personally would totally agree with writing this at the bottom of all bills considering I’m a server at a restaurant but I do believe it’s racist to only write this on the bottom of African American patrons’ checks.

  1. I do not see anything wrong with writing ‘tip not included’ at the bottom of the check and I think that this women is being overly sensitive. Maybe the server felt that she was going to stiff him/her on the tip and that is why she wrote it. If you’ve ever work food service, you are usually able to tell a tipper from a non-tipper by the way the patron interacts with you at the table. I find it hard to believe that it written because the patron was black.

  2. Even though tip is not included in bills we as a society are aware that servers should be left with at least 15-20 percent of the amount. I think writing down that tip was not included is rude regardless of who could have been served. Black or white, we are all aware of the extra costs that should be taken into account when going to a restaurant.

  3. I agree with the comment above. it doesn’t matter what race the server was, everyone should leave a tip. People take things too serious.
